02 · Prepare

Documents you need

Bring original documents together with readable photocopies. Names, dates and record details should match across every document.

  • NEA new customer application form (नयाँ ग्राहक निवेदन फारम) – download from nea.org.np or collect at the distribution centre
  • Photocopy of the owner's citizenship certificate (नागरिकता प्रमाणपत्र)
  • Photocopy of the land ownership certificate (लालपुर्जा / जग्गाधनी प्रमाणपुर्जा)
  • Building approval certificate from the municipality (नक्सा पास / भवन निर्माण इजाजत). NEA's page says 'Building Approval Certificate'; ask whether a completion certificate (निर्माण सम्पन्न प्रमाणपत्र) is also needed
  • Ward office recommendation (वडा सिफारिस)
  • Photograph of the applicant (number and size not published – confirm at the distribution centre)
  • If the applicant is not the registered owner: the document NEA's English page calls a 'resignation letter' (probably राजीनामा or the owner's consent, मञ्जुरीनामा) – confirm at the distribution centre

03 · At the office

Step-by-step process

  1. 1

Find the NEA distribution centre (वितरण केन्द्र) that serves your area. Contacts are at nea.org.np/contact-information-of-dcs.

  2. 2

Get the application form: download it from nea.org.np or collect it at the centre. Three-phase applicants can apply fully online at crm.nea.org.np/new-connection.

  3. 3

Submit the form and documents before any service line is drawn, and pay the application fee.

  4. 4

NEA estimates the cost of connecting your premises (pole, line, transformer if needed). Pay the service charge in that estimate.

  5. 5

Finish the house wiring. NEA inspects it before supply starts: the first inspection is free, your wiring contractor must be present, and re-inspections may be charged.

  6. 6

Pay the meter installation charge. NEA installs the meter and connects supply in the legal owner's name.

  7. 7

Keep every receipt. If NEA cannot connect you immediately, ask the centre to give the expected date in writing; complaints go to NEA's line 1150.

Important notes

  • Supply is given only in the legal owner's name. When buying a property, make sure past electricity bills are cleared.
  • Apply before any line is drawn: NEA says documents must be submitted before taking electricity lines.
  • NEA installs the transformer for loads up to 100 kVA; only customers above 100 kVA may install their own (Onlinekhabar, 2022).
  • Load changes on an existing meter: increases were made free, and reductions cost Rs 300 single-phase / Rs 500 three-phase (Onlinekhabar, Mangsir 2078). Confirm current rates.
  • NEA's fee schedule is undated, and the PDF text was partly garbled, so amounts should be checked at the counter.
  • Office hours: 9:00–17:00 (Magh 16–Kartik 15) and 9:00–16:00 (Kartik 16–Magh 15). NEA main office: 01-4153051, [email protected].
