Step-by-step process
- 1
First check whether you need a police report at all. A lost passport no longer needs a police report or newspaper notice; you apply for a new passport, which costs an extra Rs 5,000 in Nepal (Onlinekhabar, 2021).
- 2
For a lost citizenship certificate, get a recommendation signed by the ward chair and apply for a copy (प्रतिलिपि) at the District Administration Office's copy section. The reported procedure does not mention a police report.
- 3
For other items, or if an office or insurer asks for a police record, report the loss at your nearest Nepal Police office. The procedure and fee are not published; confirm at the office.
- 4
Confirm what the office issuing the replacement needs (for example the District Administration Office or the Department of Passports) before you apply.

Important notes
- No official Nepal Police page describing the lost-property report process or fee was found.
- Some police offices accept complaints by QR code (Kantipur, Lumbini Province, Apr 2025). Ask your local office whether this applies.
