02 · Prepare

Documents you need

Bring original documents together with readable photocopies. Names, dates and record details should match across every document.

  • Citizenship certificate of the Nepali spouse(s)
  • Foreign spouse: passport, valid visa or entry stamp, and a no-objection letter from their embassy/consulate
  • Birth certificates and proof of marital status (single, divorced or widowed) for both
  • Passport-size photographs (number not published)
  • Both parties and witnesses must attend in person (number of witnesses not published)

Step-by-step process

  3. 3

Submit the application and documents; both parties and witnesses appear in person.

Important notes

  • DAO Lalitpur's 2083 charter lists only copies of marriage certificates registered before the 2074 laws took effect, suggesting DAOs no longer register new marriages; this is not officially confirmed.
  • A foreign woman who marries a Nepali man needs a valid Nepal visa before applying for marriage-based naturalised citizenship (2082 Citizenship Rules).
  • New office_id 'district-court' added because no listed id fits.
  • Low confidence: the only detailed sources are law-firm articles without official citations.
