02 · Prepare

Documents you need

Bring original documents together with readable photocopies. Names, dates and record details should match across every document.

  • Your bluebook (सवारी दर्ता प्रमाणपत्र). The full document checklist, including whether third-party insurance proof is needed, is not published, so confirm at the office.

03 · At the office

Step-by-step process

  1. 1

Find the tax for your vehicle's engine size (cc) or, for electric vehicles, motor power (kW) in your province's rates for the current fiscal year.

  2. 2

Check whether your province has a penalty-waiver scheme for FY 2083/84. Several provinces do, with deadlines in Poush and Jestha 2083/84.

  3. 3

Pay the annual vehicle tax, the renewal fee and any late penalty at the provincial Transport Management Office (vehicle), or through an approved electronic payment system linked to the Vehicle Registration System (VRS) where your province allows it.

  4. 4

Get the renewal recorded in your bluebook at the office (confirm what the office needs).

Important notes

  • Rates differ by province. For example, a private car up to 1,000 cc costs Rs 22,000 in Bagmati but Rs 19,000 in Sudurpashchim (older table), and a private electric car up to 50 kW costs Rs 6,500 in Bagmati but Rs 11,000 (before discount) in Lumbini.
  • Bagmati, FY 2083/84: fire engines, ambulances and hearses are exempt from tax, as are modified scooters up to 150 cc for persons with disabilities. Buses, minibuses and microbuses that give fare discounts to students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities get 60% off.
  • Bagmati, FY 2083/84: owners of two-wheelers that no longer exist can close the record by paying this year's tax and renewal fee by the end of Poush 2083 (mid-January 2027). Penalties up to FY 2082/83 are then waived.
  • Koshi, FY 2083/84: owners with more than 5 years of unpaid tax can cancel the registration by paying only the latest year's tax, before 14 June 2027.
  • Bagmati: payments made through approved connected electronic systems that show in the Vehicle Registration System (VRS) need no extra verification at renewal.
  • Whether third-party insurance, a pollution test or an embossed plate is required at renewal was not confirmed. Ask the office.
  • A tax calculator on an unofficial site (Merokalam) gives much lower Bagmati rates (e.g. Rs 6,500 for a car up to 1,000 cc). It contradicts other sources and was not used.
